Can you ride an e-bike in the rain?

Usually yes in light to moderate rain, if the maker says the bike is water resistant. No to deep puddles, pressure washers, and leaving it out in a storm. Water resistant is not waterproof, and most budget listings say very little about it, so check the manual for your exact bike.
What the ratings mean

A rating usually covers one part, such as the battery or the display, not the whole bike. None of these ratings cover riding through water deep enough to reach the motor hub or the bottom of the battery.
What the listings on this site say
- Heybike Cityscape 2.0: the listing calls the battery IPX6 waterproof. That is the battery only. It says nothing about the display or controller.
- ANCHEER Sunshine: the listing mentions a "PX54 integrated waterproof line", which reads like an IP54 splash rating for the wiring.
- For the other bikes here we did not note a water rating when we checked the listings on September 18, 2026. Treat them as splash resistant at best and ask the seller.
Riding in the wet
- Brake early. Wet disc brakes grab later and wet roads give less grip. Heavy, fast bikes need much more room. Slow down more than you think you need to.
- Watch paint, metal and leaves. Lane markings, manhole covers and rail tracks are slick when wet. Cross them upright, not leaning.
- Fenders and lights. Fenders keep road spray off you and the battery. Use your lights in rain, even at noon.
- Expect less range. Cold, wet rides use more battery. Use the low end of the range calculator.
After the ride
- Wipe the bike down, especially the battery contacts, display and chain.
- Let the bike and battery dry at room temperature before you charge. Never charge a wet battery or plug a wet charger port.
- Oil the chain. Budget chains rust fast.
- Wash with a bucket and sponge or a gentle hose. Never use a pressure washer, which forces water past seals.
- Store the bike indoors or under cover. Rain while parked for days does more harm than rain while riding.
If the battery was ever under water, stop using it and contact the maker. Water damage inside a lithium battery can cause a fire days later. Water damage is also a common warranty exclusion, so read the warranty terms.
Battery safety: use only the charger that came with the bike, do not charge while you sleep or are away, keep charging bikes out of exit paths, and stop using a battery that is swollen, hot, smells odd or has been in a crash.
