Best budget e-bike for heavy riders: start with the payload number

Updated

Look for the payload (max load) number in the listing before anything else, and count yourself plus everything you carry. Of the bikes on this site, the TST Fat Tire lists the highest figure, a maker claim of 450 lb. The Jasion EB5 Ultra and Jasion RetroVolt each list 330 lb. The lighter city bikes stop at about 265 lb.

We did not see a payload number in the TST Retro listing sections we checked on September 18, 2026, so it is not in the table. Ask the seller.

What the number includes

Payload normally means rider plus cargo: backpack, groceries, child seat, lock, rack bags. A 250 lb rider with a 20 lb bag is a 270 lb load, which is already over the limit on four of the bikes above. If a listing is not clear about what its number covers, ask the seller in writing. Leave yourself room. A bike run at its limit every day wears spokes, tires and brakes faster.

Three things that matter more as weight goes up

Our pick

For most heavy riders we'd pick the EB5 Ultra: 330 lb listed, the biggest battery here, and hydraulic brakes in its listing. The caveat is legal. Its listing shows speeds far above 20 MPH, so it may not count as an e-bike where you live. If you need the highest listed load, the TST Fat Tire claims 450 lb, but that is the maker's number and the brakes are mechanical discs. Read classes and peak watts before choosing either.
