7 things to check before you buy an e-bike on Amazon
Updated
Seven checks, five minutes, before you order.
- Battery safety certification. Look for UL 2849 (whole e-bike system) or UL 2271 (battery) in the listing. Some cities, including New York City, require it. If the listing does not mention it, ask the seller.
- Battery size in watt-hours. Volts times amp-hours. This tells you more about range than the claimed miles do. Use the range calculator.
- Top speed and class. A 28 MPH bike may not be allowed on your local paths. See classes explained.
- Brakes. Disc brakes front and rear are the minimum. Hydraulic discs are better on heavy fat tire bikes.
- Weight. Fat tire bikes often weigh 65 lb or more. Think about stairs, car racks and apartment storage.
- Assembly. Most arrive about 85% assembled. Plan an hour, or pay a local bike shop to assemble and safety check it. Call first, because some shops will not work on online brands.
- Support and returns. Check the warranty length, whether the brand has a US support contact, and how returns work for a large, heavy box. Keep the packaging for the first few weeks.
Battery care basics
- Use only the charger that came with the bike.
- Do not charge overnight or unattended, and do not charge in an exit path.
- Stop using a battery that is swollen, hot, or has been in a crash.
