How long do e-bike batteries last, and how do you charge and store one safely?

There are two answers. Per charge, a budget e-bike battery lasts about 10 to 50 miles depending on its size and how you ride. Over its life, a lithium e-bike battery is commonly said to last around 3 to 5 years, or roughly 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles, before it holds clearly less than when new. Heat, deep drains and long storage at full charge shorten that.
Rough lifetime miles
We took the realistic range for each battery size on this site and multiplied by 500 full cycles, the low end of the usual figure. It is a rough planning number, not a promise. Budget packs vary and the makers here do not publish a cycle rating that we saw.

A bigger battery lasts longer in years too, because the same commute uses a smaller share of it each day. A partial charge counts as part of a cycle, so topping up from half is about half a cycle. The battery does not die at the end. It fades, and the usual sign is that your normal ride starts to drain it.
Habits that make a battery last
- Do not run it to zero often. Recharge when it is around a quarter full.
- Keep it out of heat. A hot car, a sunny window or a hot shed ages it fast.
- Let a battery that is hot from riding, or cold from outdoors, reach room temperature before you charge. Do not charge below freezing.
- For storage longer than a few weeks, leave it around half to three-quarters full, indoors and dry, and check it every month or two.
Charging safely
- Use only the charger that came with the bike, or the maker's own replacement. A charger with the wrong voltage is a fire risk even if the plug fits.
- Charge on a hard, clear surface, away from beds, sofas and the door you would use to get out.
- Stay home and awake while it charges. Unplug when full. The TST Fat Tire maker states a 6 to 7 hour charge, so start in the daytime, not at bedtime.
- Plug straight into a wall outlet, not a daisy chain of power strips.
- Have a working smoke alarm where you charge.
When to stop using a battery
Stop right away if it is swollen, cracked, leaking, very hot, smells odd, hisses, or has been in a crash or under water. Move it outside away from anything that burns if you can do so safely, and call the maker. If it smokes or burns, get out and call 911. Do not put e-bike batteries in household trash or recycling. Take them to a battery recycler or a hazardous waste site.
Buying with battery life in mind
